John M. Genovese, Sr., 88, of Peoria, formerly of Hannibal, MO, passed away at 8:40 a.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

 

John was born on March 30, 1921 in Ilasco, MO, a son of Pantaleone and Rosa (Raimondi) Genovese. He married Marjorie Harrell on June 22, 1939 in Palmyra, MO. She preceded him in death on March 23, 1996. He was also preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and five brothers.

 

He is survived by his five children, John M. (Gloria) Genovese, Jr. of Morton, Rose (Richard) Dawson of Peoria, Sandy (Steve) Mocilan of Peoria, Toni (Jim) Smalley of Peoria and Bernadette (Dan) Williams of St. Louis; two sisters, Santa Harbourn of Pekin and Armenia (Leonard) Erlichman of Peoria; twenty grandchildren; forty-five great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

 

John was the owner of Skelly's Gas Station in Peoria. He was formerly employed at the cement plant in Ilasco, MO and Caterpillar, Inc. in Peoria for 10 years. He was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church in Peoria.

 

He enjoyed carpentry and built his own home, along with several others. During his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his wife and family.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 11, 2010, at Holy Family Church in Hannibal, with Fr. Mike Quinn celebrating the Mass. Visitation will be one-hour prior to the Mass at church. Interment will be in Holy Family Cemetery in Hannibal.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

 

Local arrangements have been entrusted to Clary Funeral Home, 428 West McClure Avenue in Peoria.
